To while away the hours before the season starts (besides lurking here) I was thinking about buying a strategy/ war game. Based on Rome/Greece/ Napoleonic/American Civil War etc
Any recommendations?

I personally have always liked the Civilsation series. Totally absorbing. Haven't tried any of the others except settlers which I found to be a poor imitation of Civilisation.

Nice! I generally get practical gifts at Xmas. She claims that I am very difficult to but anything for.

I'm fairly simple, music, books and games. Throw in the odd pair of socks and I'm sorted.

Sounds fairly familiar, but substitute movies for games.
