The Raiders enter this year's NFL draft without a first-round pick. For now, to paraphrase managing general partner Al Davis.

"Don't say we won't pick (in the first round) in 2011," Davis said in response to a question about trading away the pick for defensive tackle Richard Seymour just before the 2009 season.

History shows that Davis will trade up for a first-round draft pick, especially if there's a player he covets and that player isn't likely to be around when the Raiders pick next.

The Raiders first scheduled selection in this year's three-day, seven-round draft isn't until the middle of the second round, No. 48 overall.

The last time Davis entered a draft without a first-round pick -- he traded the Raiders first-rounder in 2005 to the Minnesota Vikings as part of compensation for wide receiver Randy Moss -- he engineered a trade so that he could move into the tail end of the first round and snag Nebraska cornerback Fabian Washington.

The Raiders company line is that the team's first-round pick this year is on their roster in Seymour. So Davis has no problem with the Patriots having the Raiders first-round pick this year, which is No. 18 overall.

"You may not think it was a good trade," Davis said. "I thought it was a great trade. Still do."

Some feel that Davis paid too steep a price for Seymour, who turns 32 in October and has endured a ton of punishment during his NFL career. However, Seymour earned a Pro Bowl selection last season, and he is credited with making his defensive mates more productive.

"Sometimes you've got to overpay to get what you want," Davis said. "But I didn't overpay (for Seymour). I don't think that's overpaying at all. Sometimes you have to. You don't always win the battle. The idea is to get the player."

Davis has a long history of doing whatever it takes to win immediately. He traded two first-round picks for linebacker Ted Hendricks in 1975, and Hendricks played a pivotal role in the Raiders winning three Super Bowls in an eight-year span. Davis also traded away a first-round pick for cornerback Mike Haynes, who helped the Raiders win the Super Bowl in the 1983 season.

"We gave up a first and a second draft choice, with the idea that we were a great team; he could make us probably the greatest, or one of the greatest teams of all time, which he did," Davis said of Haynes. "We have always made trades. ... You have to do that, in my way of thinking, to be a great organization, and to have great teams."

Coach Hue Jackson said the Raiders are listening to offers from other teams and won't rule out trading up into the first round this year.

"We're throwing everything around," Jackson said. "Were not going to leave any stone unturned. Obviously, we don't have a first-round draft pick, quote-unquote, ... It's a little bit early in the process to know exactly what we're going to do. We're still working through it, still making those decisions."

Not worth it, certainly not for a CB with arrests like Jimmy Smith.

If there was a run on QB, and say Kaepernick was there at 38-43, I would consider throwing in a late rounder or a mid rounder next year to move up a few spots and get him. Dont want Mallet.

Wiz might be there from spots 70 onwards, so we could trade down for him, or even get him at 81.

I think Al will look at Jordan Cameron mid rounds as Hue likes 2TE sets. And we are sure to draft a speedy DB late on like Skrine or VanDyke.

Id be so pissed if we took a QB. We simply have too many holes, and not enough picks. The O-line is a mess. I know Kapernick is a scrabbler but my god he'd need to be. It'll be like the Art Shell years all over again.

Thats the same reason why we shouldnt and casnt move up into the first. It would simply cost too much.

In recent years we have moved around the second round, so I predict we may move up 10 places or so, but only if its a O-lineman like Carpenter or Ijalana, or if a couple of the better one's drop due to the run on QB's.

It hink some like Sherrod could be available at pick 36 or so.

Also if one of the top Corners is there I wouldnt be too pissed, but we'd  have to hit O-line in the next 2 rounds, and maybe get a good free agent.

Getting excited now.

Agree with Vann, if we can get him for a decent price (eg late 1st/early 2nd) it could be worth getting Colin.

Bill Williamson had a good report on Oakland a few weeks back saying QB isnt what they need but if they really feel Kaepernick is the future then you get him.

I'm a QB hungry fan, i really want Kaepernick (and to learn to spell his name !), like what i've read about him, plus he has tattoos so another plus Wink

I'm gutted, away this weekend at my folks who live in the 70's and dont have internet.  So its my phone i'll have to try and rely on, no live coverage this year for me.

But i would love Kaepernick with our first choice and then O-line with our second.  Then CB with our next pick.  Cant see Al going for Jimmy Smith who could be worth it as he'll slide BUT he recently said he doesnt want any troublemakers anymore.

Yes we have other holes but if the coaching staff really think Colin is the real deal then go get him.

Not saying it'll happen but if we dont get him, in 3 years time if hes all pro and a top young QB like Rivers was back then, you'll get the same fans moaning 'why didnt Al pick that QB ?'.

I can see us trading Michael Bush and getting that speedy RB later in the draft.  Reckon Bush and our 3rd and we'll move up to Round 1.

Anyway back on monday, talk to you then.  Lets not slate Al after the draft !  Wait a few years at least to see whether it was good or not.  As i always say go back to the 2003 draft when we drafted Nmandi and see how many people slated that pick then

Dont think we can trade Bush, given that he's suppose to be a free agent, depending on the labor situation.

And I honestly think after say the top 5 corners there is a massive drop off, and the 4th round corners wont be any better CJ, Ware or Mcfadden.

Given that we only have Veldheer coming back. Do you really feel confident only selection on O-lineman in the 3rd? Especially given the way the O-line started last year.

There are more holes than picks and with free agency still an unknown quantity the draft does have greater significance. Unfortunately, we have to trust in Al and co doing as good a job as they did last season and provide some hope for us poor punters.
