It's a good question. I've been looking on a boxing forum recently, purely as a guest, and I rarely have much to add to the debates there, but have still been tempted to sign up because it would somehow make it easier to navigate and remember what threads I'd already read etc.
Only reason I didn't sign up was because I couldn't be assed to go through the millionth Internet form just to get that extra little crum of opinion/knowledge on the subject.
