To me they've really merged into one and no one defensive coach ever really stood out. I actually loved the defense under Gruden and (ahem) Bresnahan.  Yeah it was the old system we've been running for years but we had some quality players on defense, loved the way Eric Allen had a great finish to his career.  Rod Woodson then came over and had that huge year in 2002 for us with a lot of huge plays.

The d-line was superb, LB's made a ton of plays including the brilliant William Thomas for us.  Romanowski was destined to be a Raider and played well.  Had a few sacks in the first few games of 03 and was looking like he would have a career yera before getting injured and ending his career.

So basically only one to choose from then!

John Marshall.....but he blitz too much so Al got rid of him

Load of crap though, under Marshall we were ranked 11th, under Rob Ryan we were ranked 3rd one year (Very deceptive stat though)

Looking at the stats we were ranked in the top 11 from 1992-1996 (Dont know who the co ordinator was then, might have been John Fox one year)

Again John Marshall was decidedly average, no other team wanted him last year.

so what did John Marshall do that was so bad...I mean defensive stat were pretty good, going from 26th rank defense in 2009 to 11th rank defense in 2010....

Please explain why Marshall was just average for a Raider DC, in my book he improved

I'm not saying he was terrible, just the way you go on about him like hes god is ridiculous.  Heard he retired anyway, again (i know i say this a lot !) but no NFL team offered him a job after his firing, tells you something doesnt it ?

And yes it backfired as after Marshall was fired, Hue wanted his own defensive coach but the Jets wouldnt let him talk to Dennis Thurman, the Packers wouldnt let us talk to Darren Perry/Winston Moss so in the end Bresh was promoted from LB coach to def co ordinator as we didnt have any other choice.

But you keep talking about Marshall like hes the best guy ever, if he was he would have been snapped up instantly.  But before Marshall you used to go on about Rob Ryan the same way who in my view is the most over hyped defensive co ordinator ever, had a nightmare year for Dallas last year despite all that talent.

That Marshall D was the best version of Al's philosophy since 2001.

Good possibility, probably yes, but difficult to say.  Wimberly had a career year for us that season, if Marshall was the def co ordinator last season he would have been down to a rookie CB like we were or a rookie safety at times.

Plus when we got Hue as coach you would probably moan if Al 'forced' him to have the same coaches and couldnt hire his own, instead Hue tried to hire his own and sadly couldnt (Due to teams rejecting the interviews) so had to promote Chuck.B

People could look at Rob Ryans top 3 defense for us that year and think 'if we had rob ryan as def co ordinator last year we would be in the playoffs'

Back in 2010 the offense was superb and firing on all cylinders, beating Denver 59-14 when the offense was amazing and so the Broncos had to try and pass their way back into it, much easier for the defense when theyre winning in the 3Q 42-14 kinda thing.

With the injuries we had last year the focus at times was on the defense and they failed big time.  The year before the offense was so good (One of the best in Raiders history) you tend to forget any defensive mishaps we had that year.

And as i keep saying if Marshall had gone to say Kansas City and then had a top 15 defense then i would be moaning like you about losing Marshall etc.  But no one picked up Marshall in any capacity, so to me that just tells me hes not that highly thought of from 2010.

But its woulda coulda shoulda type thing, its in the past, i wont be crying about Marshall leaving us after that season.

We would have been in the playoffs if Chaz Schilens caught a 3rd down pass against Detroit, if the Chargers guy fumbled and recovered 1 yard deeper (would have been the end zone), we would have got the safety and i believe momentum was going our way.  A few plays here and there and we would be in the playoffs.

Starting Boller (I remember you were quite a fan of that supes Huh) was a disaster, if Campbell doesnt get injured we are probably in the playoffs, Hue is still our coach and theres no Palmer.

Its amazing how one or two plays can really affect so much more.

Firstly, no, Rob Ryan is an idiot who is miraculously only just now being absolutely found out in Dallas. Secondly, yes, the Al D was built to create pressure from a winning position...spot the built in weakness...
