Here's another angle
By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Tuesday, May 20th, 2008 at 1:55 pm in Oakland Raiders.

The Raiders’ contract talks with running back Darren McFadden got a little more complicated because of the size of the deal struck by Atlanta Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan.

Ryan, according to the NFL Network, signed a six-year contract with $34.75 million in guaranteed money. That’s more money as the No. 3 overall pick than top pick Jake Long got from the Miami Dolphins ($30 million).

McFadden’s representatives, no doubt, will attempt to slot their pick somewhere just short of what Ryan got. They probably also took note that Raiders coach Lane Kiffin said Oakland was considering trading up to to take McFadden if they feared someone else was going to get him.

Ryan’s deal pays him more money than No. 1 overall pick JaMarcus Russell got last year.

Did anyone really think that they would get DMAC on the cheap? Despite Kiffin's comment, the fact that we have 3 capable RB's might make a difference to the deal. I certainly hope that the deal can be done and he is in camp from the outset.

He wont be cheap, was never going to be either. Lets hope a deal gets done quickly as I would hate to see a repeat of last year.

Does anyone know what Chris Long has been offered?

Not seen anything yet, but based on what Ryan got compared to Jake Long, he could get more as well.

The difficulty in all this is the differant positions they each play. Ryan's contract is high because he is a franchise QB. A RB in the same spot woudn't have got as much so McFadden shouldn't be paid near Matt Ryan's contract a spot down and a differant position. (oh god we are gonna break the bank arfen't we!)

the problem with all this is that we hear from these guys that they want to get deals done quick.  "I just want to be part of the team and get some respect as soon as possible" blah, blah.

When it comes to crunchtime, they like most players want top dollar for their position and will hold out to get it.  It happened last year with Jamarcus before the draft saying he just wants to play, i need to get with the team and gain some respect and then holds out through training camps and potentially damages the structure going into the games.

I fear with all this going on McFadden might well do the same even though he was barking the same bark as Jamarcus last year
