This is my reliable source at nflforums.com it's analasis of the first drive I will post anything else. speedkills21 Member Join Date: Feb 2008 Posts: 1,238 Rep Power: 15347553 DN's Opening Drive
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
76 yards, 10 plays, to Royal's 27 yard TD.
Unbelievable, over-the-top sophistication. I'm having fits trying to keep up.
Shanahan ran NO 2 PLAYS OUTTA THE SAME FORMATION.
All the way down the field, his formation is SAYING one thing, his play call DOING another.
Ryan got hella outcoached.
Play 1 is a good example.
Play 1: 1-10-24. Essentially, 3 TE's R (outermost is a Wing), WR L, 1 RB. Formation is SCREAMING power run R. Instead OL stretches R, QB pitches on reverse to Wing Royal, coming L. QB leads. Richardson in front, in space---outstanding---speed, angle, control---takes on Cutler at point, at scrimmage, forces cutback. Royal slips, gets up. Nam from the edge gets him at +2.
Shanahan motioned 7 of the 10 plays. Primary purpose of motion is to diagnose D. There are other purposes, apparently.
Play 2: 2-8-26. Motion into: I Backs, TE L, Wing L, WR R. Play action. Burg hits RT first step to seal edge vs Stretch, never gets going, walled at scrimmage. Kelly vs RG and C pushes, keeps pushing, no, no hands up either. Warren pushes LG 3 yards, gives up when QB steps R twice. Richardson vs LT gets leverage 1st step, held a sec, LT lets go, #98 free, good closing speed, hits QB at release. CB Hall bites on bomb that isn't there, turns back as Royal hooks, +16.
Play #3, tho all different, attempts to do the same thing DN did on play #1, Royal's reverse.
Play 3: 1-10-42. Motion into: I, slot L, TE R. OL stretches R. FB takes 1 step R, leads L. Scatback Young takes a step R, runs L. Away from Stretch, away from TE. Richardson comes down too far, makes very athletic recovery to tackle from behind at +7. CB Hall, in front, over slot, eliminates FB in backfield, good. Ho bit into Stretch, wrong way, takes himself out. If #98 doesn't make that tackle, Young's in space vs Huff, who shows up on TV with solid angle. Still. Young. After #24, TD.
D on the above 3 plays is the same, 4-3-4, L to R, Burg, Kelly, Warren, #98. RB is Sam, Mo is Mike, Ho's at Will. Like I said on play #2, RB stacked scrimmage once and blitzed.
Play 4: 2-3-OK49. No motion. 1 RB, 1 WR L, 2 WR's and TE bunched R. Shanahan has forced Routt into the game, over bunch. Runs at #26. Burg in front gets driven 5 yards, ends up in front of play, still fighting block. Kelly, good play, from far comes down, thru much traffic, big man, helps tackle from behind. Routt kicked out and canned by pulling RT. Wilson comes up, forces tackle at +7. Hall in front vs WR turns it in, good.
Play 5: 1-10-42. Get this. Shanahan's got 3 WR's and a TE, but 3 of those 4 guys are TE's. Play is incomplete to TE Jackson, who lined up wide R and burned lazy, overconfident Hall so bad, #23's feet only appear on TV. An out, R side, +11, pass way too hi. Wide open. Slot L was Sheffler, Wilson man over. Another guy is next to RT, strong R. Royal, I guess it is, is L vs Nam. Burg vs that 3rd TE gets 3 yards, no hands up, bad. Warren at LDT for the first time, hit by RG, then vs RT, gets 1 yard and a little leverage when ball's gone. RDT Kelly gets nowhere vs C when freed up RG bangs him. #98 is getting inside LT, runs into LG. Horrible.
Play 6: 2-10-44: Motion into: 2 TE's L, 1 RB, WR R. Stretch L, 1st play to go as written. Wilson's quickness in backfield totally occupies LT, then FB, totally. Burg at RE for the first time, A+, stretches TE exactly in front of play, at scrimmage. RB in space, perfect angle, at scrimmage. Young cuts back inside Burg and RB, runs BOOM into #98 who's come untouched from far side. Warren too was stretched in direction of play, pushed 3 yards downfield, then free, comes up, piles on.
Play 7: 3-9-43: Motion into: 0 TE's, 2 WR's close L, 2 slot R, 1 RB. 4-man rush. Burg dominated by RT, tries speed, dominated again. Warren vs C, then RG, gets nowhere. Kelly vs 2, good push. If DT's got their hands up... Scott at RE pushed like a rag doll, goes flopping off into the distance, handled by TE, FB waiting to help, none needed. Stokely, slot R, hooks vs Routt, too much time, +13.
Play 8: 1-10-30. Motion into: I, TE R, Wing R, WR L. Stretch L, away from TE and Wing, cutback, Hall gains 3. Ho makes the play, attacks FB in hole, forces cutback. Mo too---BOOM into LG, right in front. Kelly's fighting with C and RG, then C, right in front of play, totally occupied. Warren is pushed yards downfield by #73. Burg, far side, comes down, twists inside TE, free, makes tackle at +3 upon cutback. RB comes from backside, fights RT, sheds him too late, kinda breakeven.
Play 9: 2-7-27. Offset I L, TE L, WR each side. Royal, 12 yard out, vs Hall, open, pass too hi, #23 beat by 2 steps. 5-man rush, L to R---Burg, speed, pushed past easy by RT. Kelly good push vs 2, 2 yards, then walled, hands up, yes. Warren fights thru G, trips, falls at QB's feet. Richardson vs air, cut by HB. RB stacked R, comes, pushed miles away by LT and FB.
Play 10: 3-7-27. Motion into: 1 WR L, 2 WR's R, TE R. Burg stunted inside Kelly. QB saw it and rolled R.
What happened next is open to dispute.
For sure, Wilson is NOT over TE, he's deep in zone.
Huff is on top far side.
Routt follows Stokely half way across, then back to slot R. This indicates man.
However.
TE runs a short out on the R, under Stokely, a pick.
No one follows him.
Routt stays with Stokely. Again---looks like man.
If zone, Routt should stay outside.
But, man---that'd put Mo on TE (as Wilson is so deep).
But Mo's in the middle of the field.
So when TE picks out underneath, Mo wouldn't have a chance, anyway.
He doesn't even try, makes it moot.
Hall jumps that TE. He knows he has Wilson behind him.
But that'd be zone.
My conclusion: They're in man. Wilson's over the top that half. Mo's got TE. They've cheated Mo way inside. For reasons.
If TE runs the short out, away from Mo---that'd make 3 vs 3---Stokely, Royal, TE vs Routt, Hall, Wilson.
They're sposed to play football. They're sposed to feel that.
In practice, I mean, football practice, it looks like this. If Hall jumps that TE and gets beat deep, he gets bitched out for letting that WR go.
If he sticks with WR on a Thursday morning and QB hits TE underneath, he's blamed for that.
There is no getting away from Ryan's D containing, for sure, an ambiguity, shall we call it, in it.
I hate that.
Shanahan totally exploited it.
If man, Mo's not on TE, Wilson's not on TE, no one's on TE.
If zone, why's Routt lasered on motion, why stick with Stokely?
If I'm correct, if they're just sposed to "play football" there---it almost worked.
Wilson was late.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
12 plays told the sorry story of 0-17 in H1. But for CB Hall and a couple close breaks, we played a lot closer than the score.
DN drove 76 yards to a TD to start the game.
* Play 1: It was DN's 2nd snap of the nite, a hook to rookie Royal for +16, vs Hall. WR sold CB on the bomb, CB got lazy, TURNED HIS BACK---GUESSing bomb. Ricky Brown stacked on D's R and blitzed. Richardson came free on that side at 2 secs, showed good speed closing, hit QB at release.
* Play 2: Came 5 snaps later, 3rd and 9 on our 43. Stokely beat Routt on a hook for +13. F- pass rush, L to R, Burg, Warren, Kelly, Richardson, 4 rushers vs 6 blockers. QB had all the time and space he could desire.
* Play 3: Royal's 26 yard TD came on 3rd and 7. 4-man rush, Burg stunted inside Kelly, QB saw it and rolled R. Hall, like an idiot/fool/hotdog/punk rolled up vs rollout like D's gonna rotate over the top of him like HS---Hall bit on QB's rollout, even tho he's 20 yards away, dropped WR.
JLH returned the ensuing KO 57 yards to DN's 35. Eight straight runs made 2nd and goal on the 6.
* Play 4: Russell's first pass, fake-stretch-L-roll-R. Despite 8 straight runs, DN's all over it, DE in QB's face. Still, excellent pass to Miller on the 4, who's obviously PULLED by his jersey, blatant hold by #33, who's beat first step. No way a Raider gets away with that penalty. It would've made first and goal. Score was still 0-7. Next play, Russell fumbled.
Raider D then forced a punt after Richardson tackled Pittman short on 3rd and 1, Kif had to use his red flag, tho.
After the punt, Russell screened to McFad for +11. Then, our fancy rookie lined up at QB in shotgun, handed off to Fargas for +6, which brings us to:
* Play 5: 3rd and 1 on the 38. Fake-stretch-L-roll-R works excellently, Russell's has lots of time and room. Curry's wide open on DN's 40, drops hi ball---ALL on Curry.
* Play 6: Lechler's 62 yard punt---gunner Branch hustled down and tipped ball out of endzone, touched down inside the 1 by Sam Wms. But Branch touched just a toe of white chalk, hence a touchback.
* Play 7: Sheffler +72. Fake-stretch-L-roll-R totally suckers Burg, F-, who gets half the BLAME. Mo's in Tampa 2, Cover 2 where MLB has deep middle (thanks 007). Mo beat by TE on post.
We held DN to a FG, despite 1st down on the 4, thanks to a formation penalty that nullified a TD which took so long I went to the kitchen for a coke---pass rush that bad. And thanks to Cutler missing Stokely at the L pylon on 3rd down, pass too tall, Wilson beat. The FG made 0-10.
Our next possession was ruined by a sack on the first play---fake-stretch-L-straight-dropback. QB's looking deep. Beautiful pocket for 3.5 secs, sack comes at 5 secs. #55 reacted first to run, redirected when he read pass, slipped on his butt, got back up and charged QB from 10 yards away. RT Green's back is turned. This one's all on QB. His audible 2 plays later, costing us a delay-of-game, making 3rd and 17, didn't help.
DN went 57 yards to Pittman's 3 yard TD, and 0-17.
* Play 8: Royal beat Hall for +11, with 15 more for hit outta bounds. It was 3rd and 1 near midfield. Royal started wide L, motioned R, then L, then R. This last was apparently too much for the vet all pro, who's way late getting over the top of that last little hitch. No pick, no traffic, just air (in the helmet).
* Play 9: Two snaps later, Royal on the R runs an out/up/out. This combo lands the vet on his face, 8 yards away. The pass is hi, takes rookie off his feet, who lands just in time for Hall to spear him for half-the-distance-to-the-goal, down to the 4. The completion was for +12.
* Play 10: Pittman's 3 yard TD, over LG. 6-man front, L to R: Scott (hand up), Richardson, Sands, Warren, Kelly, Ho (hand up). Next level, L to R: Huff, RB (who's crowding, 1 yard off RG), Nam. Deep are Hall L and Mo R. Gaps are pretty well covered. Kelly wins outside, forces Pittman inside. Warren hits well into LG, drives him, is in position to make play, but just stands there, leaning on G, as BALL goes by---#61 looks gassed. Mo--steps up hard, fast, excellent, appreciative of gap's exposure. There's FB, BOOM! Good job, Mo. Next: Hall. He's LATE, LATE, very late. His feet slip a bit, costing him an extra half sec. Mo took out FB, we need next guy to FILL. NOW! Hall is 3 yards deep in endzone, when Pittman crosses goal line.
* Play 11: After the KO, it's 1st and 10 on the 17. Shotgun. Empty backfield. D blitzes 6 vs 5 blockers. LB comes free from D's L, overruns QB who niftily sidesteps, runs R, heaves in full stride. Curry, posting from L, open by 2 steps at +50, woulda been 83 yard TD. WR misjudges, underruns tall ball, which goes thru his hands.
Russell hit Schilens for +19 on the next play, and Fargas swept L for +13 a snap after.
* Play 12: Reverse, JLH fumbles, recovers, -15. Play looked to go.
We punted about 1:30 before HT. Royal beat Hall on a gorgeously executed comeback on the R for +18, very hard to stop, a great pattern, rookie sprinting back towards QB. But Hall's loose, late, lazy, lacksadaisical. Near midfield, a few plays later, Nam tackled scrambling QB for +1 on 3rd and 2, preserving 0-17 into HT.
