BBC SPORT | Motorsport | Formula One | Hamilton fights back for victory

In a race that could have been processional, another mistake by a major team put their primary driver in a spot of bother towards the end of the race. Lewis Hamilton having taken pole with an inspired lap in qualifying, shot out of the gate to lead the race from the outset. It was looking to be a formality for him after getting a good lead on Massa and the first of the pit stops did liitle to change the running order. However, half way through the race, Timo Glocks spectacular shunt brought out the safety car and reduced a sizeable lead to next to nothing.
In an unexpected turn of events, Hamilton did not enter the pits under yellow to change tyres and add fuel to finish, as all the other major combatants did. This meant that later, he would have to stop when the others didn't. He was supposed to be able to build up enough of a lead to make the stop and still remain in the lead. But the plan had been flawed, by assuming that the safety car would come in earlier than it did. Unfortunately,  it stayed out for 2 or 3 laps longer than anticipated. This meant that when Hamilton had to pit, he could only rejoin in 5th place. He did not let this ruin the day though. One of the leaders still had to pit and after an easy pass of his teammate(team orders?) he raced on to complete 2 robust overtaking maneouvres on both Massa and Piquet to once again lead the race. This was how it finished and he now has a clear lead over his rivals for the championship.
