The Denver Broncos will be looking for a new captain.

Perennial Pro Bowler and future Hall of Fame safety John Lynch told FOXSports.com that he and the Broncos have agreed to part ways.

"I met with Mike (Shanahan), and we both knew it wasn't really working," Lynch said. "To coach's credit, he understood it and is allowing me to seek other opportunities. Just in my gut, it didn't feel right anymore, but Mike couldn't have been any better about it."

Lynch has a long, storied career in the NFL and became a hard-hitting figure and fixture at the Pro Bowl.

"Coach was appreciative that I played here and made four Pro Bowls for him and was captain of the team, but in the end, I couldn't do what I hoped to deliver, which was help bring Denver a championship. And I regret that."

Five years from now, an already crowded Hall of Fame class with Michael Strahan, Jonathan Ogden, Warren Sapp, Larry Allen, Junior Seau and possibly Brett Favre could get even more crowded if Lynch decides to retire.

Has the end come for the defensive stalwart?

"I don't know," Lynch said. "I think the only way I play is in the perfect situation. As a player and when you get older, sometimes you see different hand writings on the wall than everybody else.

"I'm not sure what I want to do at this point. It all comes up on you pretty fast. I still have the desire to play, but at this point in my career, I really got to find something that's the perfect fit."

You may well be right but do we need another safety even though it is Lynch? I think he may well retire so the question of him coming to Oakland may never come up.
