What a rollercoaster of emotions the second half was. Taking the lead on Walker's first TD reception and dominating the 3rd quarter biult up hopes, only to be dashed when Favre brought them back to level it with drive that reminded you of what he is capable of doing.  Then the last gasp FG attempt by the Jets that missed but we called a time out to Ice the kicker and it came back to bite us in ass. He made it afterwards to push us into overtime. Then it was a poor effort from both offenses that had the punters getting a great deal of time on the field. But with lees than 5 minutes left Russell managed a drive that took them to within SeaBass's range but it was a yard further than his record during a game. With the expectation of giving Favre the ball with good field position, Jano stepped up and showed what he is capable of an dthe ball sailed over with room to spare to give us the win.

I could do without the drama at the end of these games. Hopefully, now that we know how to finish games off, we can now start winning a few more! It will be interesting to see how we get on at the Ravens after this one.

Here is the official Raiders blurb.

Raiders Ground Jets 16-13 in Overtime Thriller

Sebastian Janikowski's franchise record 57-yard field goal with 2:30 left in overtime gave The Oakland Raiders a 16-13 victory over the New York Jets at the Oakland Coliseum in 2008 NFL Regular Season Week 7 action. QB JaMarcus Russell threw for 203 yards and a score and rookie DE Trevor Scott chalked up his first two career quarterback sacks. WR Javon Walker scored his first touchdown as a Raider and SS Gibril Wilson snagged his first interception as a member of the Silver and Black. CB DeAngelo Hall upped his team lead in interceptions to three, and rookie WR Chaz Schilens made his first career start at wide receiver.

The Jets won the opening coin toss and elected to receive. Janikowski’s opening kickoff sailed through the end zone for a touchback. The Jets offense took the field at their own 20 with Brett Favre at quarterback. The Jets drove to the Raiders 22 before having to settle for a K Jay Feely 40-yard field goal attempt. The successful kick gave the Jets a 3-0 lead with 11:41 left in the first quarter.

Rookie safety Tyvon Branch returned the ensuing kickoff 20 yards to the Oakland 30 where the Silver and Black attack took the field with JaMarcus Russell at quarterback. The Jets forced a three-and-out and P Shane Lechler came on to punt to RB Leon Washington. Rookie DE Trevor Scott flew down the field and dropped Washington for no gain at the New York 13 after a 49-yard punt.

The Jets moved to their 20 before the Raiders forced a punt. P Reggie Hodges 45-yard punt went out of bounds at the Raiders 35. The Raiders drove to the Jets 47 before Lechler was called on to punt for the second time. Washington muffed the 33-yard punt and LB Sam Williams recovered at the New York 16.

Five plays later, Janikowski drilled a 29-yard field goal to tie the game at 3-3 with 1:49 left in the first quarter.

After Washington returned the ensuing kickoff to the Jets 16, New York moved out to their own 44 before the Raiders defense forced a punt on 4th and 4. WR Johnnie Lee Higgins returned Hodges punt to the Oakland 38 but an offsides penalty gave the Jets a first down. Several plays later, safety Gibril Wilson intercepted a Favre pass in the end zone and the Raiders took over at their own 20 with 9:01 left in the second quarter.
The Raiders drove to the Jets 23 before having to settle for a Janikowski 40-yard field goal attempt. The kick was no good and the Jets took possession at their own 30 with 4:04 left in the second quarter.

The Jets moved to the Raiders 45 before the Silver and Black forced a punt. Hodges came on to kick to Higgins who made a fair catch at the Oakland 12. The Raiders were unable to mount a scoring drive and the first half ended with the game tied at 3-3.

Branch returned the opening kickoff of the second half to the Oakland 30. Russell capped the 9-play, 70-yard drive with an 8-yard touchdown pass to WR Javon Walker. Janikowski’s extra point was good and the Raiders led 10-3 with 9:35 left in the third quarter.

Washington fielded Janikowski’s ensuing kickoff eight yards deep in the end zone for a touchback and the Jets took possession at their own 20. The Jets drove into Raiders territory before the Raiders forced a punt. Higgins returned Hodges punt 22 yards to the Oakland 37.

The Raiders were unable to move the ball and were forced to punt. Lechler’s 60-yard punt bounced into the end zone for a touchback and New York took over at their own 20. The Jets drove to midfield before the Raiders forced a punt. Higgins made a fair catch of Hodges’ 33-yard punt at the 17. The Raiders moved to the Jets 39 before the drive stalled. Lechler’s punt was downed at the New York 13.

Washington’s 11-yard TD run capped a 9-play, 87-yard drive that took 5:25 off the clock. Feely’s extra point was good and the game was tied at 10-10 with 8:00 left in 4th quarter.

The Raiders next drive was kept alive when LB Jon Alston scampered 21 yards on a fake punt. The Raiders drove to the Jets 19 before settling for a Janikowski field goal attempt. The successful 37-yard field goal gave the Raiders a 13-10 lead with 2:56 left in the fourth quarter.

New York’s next possession ended when a Jets receiver broke off his route and Favre threw deep. CB DeAngelo Hall picked off the errant pass and returned the interception to the Jets 40.

The Jets held the Raiders to a three-and-out and Lechler came on to punt. Lechler’s punt was downed at the Jets 5-yard line and the Jets took over with 1:24 left in the game. The Jets drove to the Raiders 34 as Favre spiked the ball to stop the clock with 12 seconds left. The Jets ran one more play, an incomplete pass, before bringing Feely on for a 52-yard field goal attempt. The Raiders called time out before the kick, which Feely missed. Feely made the second attempt and tied the game at 13-13 with three seconds left.

Branch’s return of the ensuing kickoff ended regulation and the game went to overtime.

The Jets won the overtime coin toss and elected to receive. Washington returned the opening kickoff of the extra period to the Jets 22. The Jets drove to their 49 before rookie DE Trevor Scott recorded his second sack of the day and forced a punt. Higgins fielded the punt and was dropped immediately at the Raiders 20.

The Jets held the Raiders to a three-and-out and Lechler came in to punt. Washington returned the punt to the 29 but a block in the back penalty moved New York back to their own 10. The Raiders returned the favor with a three-and-out of their own.

Higgins returned the punt 11 yards to the Oakland 45. The Jets held the Raiders to another three-and-out and Lechler came on to punt. The punt was downed at the New York 18. After picking up one first down, the Jets faced 3rd and 12 at their own 33. The Raiders defense held and forced a punt. Higgins made a fair catch at the 19 and the Raiders offense took the field with 4:36 left in overtime.

The Raiders drove to the Jets 39 before Janikowski came on to try to win the game with a 57-yard field goal attempt. The kick split the uprights and gave the Raiders a 16-13 win!

NEXT WEEK: The Raiders make their second of four total trips to the Eastern Time Zone to face the Ravens in Baltimore on Sunday, October 26. The Raiders traveled to Buffalo to play the Bills on September 21.

Totally agree !  I was down after last week but was hoping Oakland would bounce back, as usual Russell starts off okay but then went a bit quiet.  The penalties in the first quarter were ridiculous.

Then with the ints etc i suddenly thought we can win this, gutted Favre led the Jets late in the game though, thought we had him for a safety.  The timeout call from Cable I knew was gonna happen, with those calls sometimes they will work, others they wont.  If he didnt use a timeout and Feeley got it with the first kick people would moan Cable didnt freeze him.

Same for the Jano FG, if Jano misses then Cable looks a dunce and people moan all week as it would give the Jets great field position and they could have won.

Anyway at 1am last night up near Manchester you could hear me shouting after the win !  Thats what i love about the NFL, some weeks you can be totally gutted (Bills/Chargers), others totally depressed (Saints) but when you get a win like that its a great feeling !

DE Scott played well with 2 sacks, Schillens didnt exactly do much though.  WR Javon Walker was alright and made some good grabs.  Happy as anything when the fat bald guy kicked the long FG though !

Always stuck up for the choice of Jano when we got him, yeah we could have got Shaun Alexander etc but go back to that 2000 draft and see how many players drafted are still with their teams.  Jano wasnt a terrible choice, Chiefs were rumoured to get him in Round 2 that year plus in 1999 we lost so many games by 3 points or less as our kicker had a nightmare.  Knew we were going to get Jano that year, hes had some poor games in the past (Remember one against the Niners with 3 misses) but hes on a roll this year and has done well

Granted we could have lost this game easily but after a win like this you get greedy and think 'damn we could have beaten San Diego / Buffalo' and could be 3-3 or more !  Got a 'winnable' game against the Ravens coming up, not expecting the win though but you never know.  Cant believe i'm saying it but to get to 3-4 would be superb.

Yeah just watched that.  Had a few years of listening to Greg Papas on the radio via various ways.  I love Gamepass HD so i can watch the actual game but do miss Papas commentary.

Fer-you

At last we stick it out to the end

Good points

Walker finally arrived as a Raider, keep it up Javon
We kept with the run despite a poor average but against a good run D so ell done for sticking with it
Jamarcus much more settled but still had the jitters at crucial moments and looks down one receiver only
Special teams were good despite Tyvon's nerve shredding ball handling. Lechler and Jano were the differance
Ricky Brown and Gbril Wilson were tackling machines and with a mention for Scott were the highlights on D
Just keeping going till the final whistle was a major hump to get over.
We adjusted well to Farve as the game went on,his first drive was a lttle scary
Calling and executing the fake punt both needed guts.

Bad points

Penalties in the first half were embarrising and are why we get called out on our professionalism
Run D fell apart at times with Jones ripping off big runs and Leon Washington brushing away arm tackles on the TD
Prevent D on the last drive was bad with poor tackling again. They only needed a FG so we backed off as if they needed a TD which was stupid.

Poor tackling and penalties is a problem that we have had for some and obviously still needs to be addressed as a matter of some urgency.

I do like JaMarcus but he constantly seems to be looking down at one WR as Aeyjay says.  Still hes young and there have been plays where he goes to his secondary WR just not often

Russell's reads will get better with more experience on the field.  Although College is great, the NFL is so fast paced that anything he was used to gets thrown out of the window.  Checking down receivers at this pace will only be done through proper game time and is starting to come to him now.

His figures are getting better too.  The only thing he has to do is not try to force anything too much, don't get panicky and if the line breaks down to feel that and roll out and either pass or throw the ball away.  If he gets a couple of interceptions then so be it if they are justified.  He just needs to get them out of his head quick and get back on the horse again.
